Laser Safety School

The Laser Safety School (SSL), created within the AITEM Academy, offers training services for both the industrial, research, telecommunications, and civil applications sector and the health, aesthetics, and veterinary sector.

It provides courses at different levels for Laser Safety Officers, Laser Safety Supervisors, and Laser Users.

It aims to be the technical and qualified point of reference for problem solving activities related to laser safety.

The courses can be run online, at AITEM’s premises, or at the premises of companies requesting them for their employees.

Course for Laser Safety Officers [40 h]

Laser Safety Officers are expert professionals able to assess laser risk, in accordance with legislative decree 81/08 and further amendments, aiming at eliminating or reducing it in the workplace. They are able to dimension and choose the most adequate prevention and protection measures and to verify the class of laser products. Laser Safety Officers operate within the industrial, research, telecommunications, and civil applications sector and the health, aesthetics, and veterinary sector. Even though the tasks to be implemented for ensuring safety in the two fields are overlapping, specific knowledge for risk assessment and the related controls and procedures to follow partly depend on the type of sources used and on the specific characteristics of the activity and the workplace. The course consists of 40 hours, 4 of which are dedicated to the specific industry. It is possible to cover both industries with a 44-hour course.

Corse for Laser Safety Supervisors [24 h]

Laser Safety Supervisors are professionals who manage and supervise laser safety daily withing the organization, following indications by the Laser Safety Officers and their employers, in order to maintain the safe use of devices over time. Laser Safety Supervisors don’t assess laser risk but must know its procedures and how to interpret its results in order to verify that the deriving risk containment measures are correctly implemented and remain effective over time. The course consists of 24 hours when all the laser safety topics are covered with a lower in-depth analysis compared to the course for Laser Safety Officers.

Course for Laser Users [8 h]

Laser Users utilise laser devices for the most diverse applications: industrial, research, health, aesthetic, etc. They must be informed on the risks they face during the work activity and on how to manage dangerous situations for laser radiations. They must follow the indications by the Laser Safety Supervisor, Laser Safety Officer, and their employer, and use the personal protective equipment assigned and on which they have received adequate training. The course consists of 8 hours covering the principles of laser safety and describing the personal protection equipment to be used.
